CardFlight wins Electronic Transactions Association’s 2014 Technology Innovation Award


CardFlight has won the 2014 Technology Innovation Award from the Electronic Transactions Association (ETA), the global trade association representing companies that offer electronic transaction processing products and services.  The Technology Innovation Award is presented annually to one company that makes significant advancements for the industry and has demonstrated results with a product that is currently available in the marketplace. 

This announcement came on April 9th during the President’s Dinner & Star Awards Gala in Las Vegas, NV, part of TRANSACT 14, the largest annual event hosted by the ETA.  The ETA Star Awards are designed to recognize and showcase individuals and companies that have made a significant difference in the payments industry, whether through innovation, business practices, advocacy, or contributions to the association.

CardFlight makes mobile payments easy for Peloton Cycle

Getting your sweat on this winter can be challenging, especially when your body is hiding under a big parka! In times like these, fitness-lovers get their fix from Peloton Cycle, whose elegant indoor bike deliver live and on-demand studio cycling classes from the best cycling instructors. 

As their popularity surged, Peloton faced a new challenge. Expanding to multiple locations, they needed a flexible way to take in-person credit card payments. Peloton wanted to create a seamless paying experience for their customers, while also preserving their branding. CardFlight provided the tools to help Peloton develop a custom-branded POS system with all the features they needed.

The key to seamlessness is to keep the entire payment system on one platform. Peloton has been using Stripe for online payments, and the optimal method would integrate in-person payments with Stripe as well as their reporting tools and CRM system. CardFlight was perfect for this. With our software development kit and card readers streamlining the process, Peloton had their shiny new mobile POS ready in just a few weeks.

Mobile Payments Hackathon: A Huge Success!

On Saturday October 19, CardFlight and Stripe threw a full-day Mobile Payments Hackathon at the Alley NYC. The goal of the Hackathon was to encourage the development of mobile payments technology and provide developers with the tools and inspiration they need to build awesome products that improve the payments industry.

The event was a huge success with lots of participants and teams building awesome stuff. About 50 hackers participated and created unique projects using the Stripe API and CardFlight SDK. At the end of the Hackathon, they had three minutes to present their demos in front of a panel of mobile payments experts, including John Frankel of ffVC, Josh Abramowitz of Deep Creek Capital and Matt Witheiler of Flybridge Capital.

We had 13 teams present demos, including the CardFlight and Stripe teams. CardFlight created “BouncerBid”; an app that allows bouncers of nightclubs to receive bribes from people waiting in line, and allow those who are bribing the most to skip the line and enter the club. Stripe built “PigeonPayer”, a digital credit card roulette app, where you swipe cards through the CardFlight reader which stores them, then the app randomizes and chooses however many people you want to pay the bill and automatically charges them. Obviously, neither team was eligible to win.

Here’s the full list of hacks that were demo’d:

  1. CeeJay – A food-ordering platform that lets you search by product (ie. 2 medium lattes) and finds local restaurants with that product.
  2. SellNow – A simple marketplace app that allows you to enter the product you want to sell, shares a QR code and let’s you pay through the Stripe API
  3. KarmaSwipe – A socially good payments platform for fund raisers and canvassers on the street. You add name, information, donation amount and cause, and swipe the card for the donation.
  4. CabIQ – An app that allows you to share a cab with others that are waiting in a queue and splits the total fairly.
  5. ElNerdo – An interactive shopping site that allows you to scroll through products with your hands using leap motion and the Stripe API.
  6. FaceValue – A facial verification payments platform that allows you to make a successful charge with your photo.
  7. – An app that allows you to sell things to your friends right off your back, through NFC and OAuth.
  8. Formation – An mix between google form and Stripe, which allows you to create an event, share with your friends and charge each event goer for their share.
  9. iNPO – A simple fundraising app that allows you to enter contact info, swipe the card and thank you for the commitment.

10. MoveEasy – A marketplace for movers and movees that uses Stripe’s Advanced Payments network. You set your maximum price, bid for the task and shows a listing of top movers available.

CardFlight helps power donations at the Henry Vilas Zoo

Today is an exciting day. It’s the day we helped power a zoo to collect credit card donations, replacing those bulky boxes where people throw unwanted foreign currency, small coins, and lint. CardFlight has been working closely with a team of engineers who built out a donation kiosk for the Henry Vilas Zoo in Madison, Wisconsin. They went live with the kiosk today, allowing visitors to swipe their credit card, type in a donation amount and support the zoo. 
By replacing the box with a swipeable kiosk stand, the zoo is able to bring in more donations. Nowadays people carry less and less cash, which means that zoos and other organizations are losing valuable donations that would help grow their efforts in conservation and education. Allowing swipe capability for donations, simply encourages visitors to give more. Scott Acker, of Heck of an IDEA, the development agency behind the integration said, “I had this idea for the zoo but couldn’t find the right middleware to power it. Luckily, I found CardFlight which gave me the hardware, software and support I needed to make this happen.”

Add in-person payments into your app with CardFlight and Stripe


Today, CardFlight is announcing the launch of our private beta, allowing developers to easily integrate card-present payments into their own mobile applications. CardFlight offers an encrypted magnetic stripe reader and a simple SDK/API so that developers can safely and securely accept card present payments in their apps, with support for their existing merchant account.  CardFlight works with most iOS and Android devices.

In addition, to launching our private beta, we are announcing that we have partnered with Stripe to make it super easy to use your existing Stripe accounts in CardFlight-powered applications. Stripe’s Cristina Cordova said, “We’re proud to be working with CardFlight, as they share our developer-friendly approach to payments.  CardFlight provides tools to any Stripe user looking to incorporate in-person payments into their mobile apps, while still taking advantage of Stripe’s simple pricing and seamless setup.”

The CardFlight SDK is designed to be embedded within a developer’s own application.  With just a few lines of code to integrate, developers can ensure that the flow to take a payment matches the rest of their app’s functionality. Let’s have a look and see how easy it is to integrate the CardFlight SDK into an iOS app:

Step 1 - Setup your app with CardFlight

Import the ‘CardFlight.h’ file in any UIViewController or UIViewController subclass header file where you want to access the CardFlight user interface. You will also need to set the CardFlight delegate within the Controller.

To access your CardFlight account you will need to set your Developer API key and the associated Merchant Account Token that you wish to connect to when making payments. The Developer API key and Merchant Account Token will be shown on your Developer Dashboard, after creating and adding an account (i.e. Stripe) to your profile. See here for details on adding a new or existing Stripe account to CardFlight.

Step 2 - Swipe a card

To Swipe a card, you first need to initiate the card reader ready to accept card swipes. The card reader will be on standby mode for the next 10 seconds to accept a card swipe. The reader will timeout after this time and would require the same function to be called again before performing a new card swipe.

Step 3 - Handle swipe response

Handling the swipe response will not actually perform the payment, rather it will return first name, last name, and last 4 digits as (if the swipe was a success), or an error message if not successful (timeout, incorrect swipe, hardware error etc.) This will allow the app to further process an order/checkout until the user is ready to finalize the payment.

CardFlight @ FinTechHack

This year’s FinTechHack was a great success. Well over 200 developers got together to develop innovative financial projects using the platforms from some of
the leading financial technological partners. They spent 24 hours hacking, and demoed what they had built in front of a crowd of over 300 members of the NYC fintech startup community.

CardFlight was honored to be one of the featured technology partners. The award for best use of CardFlight went to an app called Mobile Sales Platform. The team developed a catalog sales app where you could publish a catalog with products for sale, hand an iPad to a client, the client browses the products and when they are ready to buy, you can swipe directly on the mobile device. An example use case is at a restaurant where patrons can check out table side.

This creative app highlights the malleability of CardFlight and the

fact that there are many ways to incorporate CardFlight into your app.  We look forward to supporting future hackathons in the NYC startup ecosystem and elsewhere.

Card Readers are Taking over the Mobile Payments Market

BI Intelligence examined the specific reasons why card readers will beat out Near-field Communications (NFC). 

Small businesses are jumping at the opportunity to create a personalized payment experience for consumers by attaching card readers to their mobile devices. 

Here are our reasons why mobile card readers have the lead in the market:

  • Consumer Behavior: 80% of US consumers own a credit or debit card. These are widely used and most familiar forms of payment. By integrating with mobile card readers, there is no changing of consumer behavior. Card reader solutions are addressing the current situation, instead of hoping that NFC payment solutions will take off (in which there is no guarantee that this will happen). 
  • Competitive Market: By continuing to work with payment processors, card-readers can continue to make their hardware cheap or free while staying competitive. Because NFC is a fairly new technology, prices have to stay high.
  • Time/Effort: Employees already know how to swipe a card. However, training them for NFC payments takes some time and effort. With card reader solutions, there is no need for training as the software is straightforward and the technology is familiar.
  • Simplicity: The question that begs to be asked in the “NFC vs card reader” debate is whether tapping a phone is any easier than swiping a card. Consumers will most likely lean towards using the form of payment that they’re familiar with as opposed to using a new technology, that while it may be simple and quick, is not second nature.

How to Choose A Payment Processor

CardFlight is processor agnostic, meaning we integrate with most major credit card processors.  But, we still want to make sure are able to find the right processor for your business. Here are things to consider when choosing your payment processor:

1. Ease of Setup: It’s important to ask these questions of your payment processor: How long will it take to integrate? How easy is the signup process? Can I customize the solution to suit my needs? Are there mobile capabilities? You want a processor that’s easy to integrate with and which can start processing your payments right away. 

2. Stability and Security: Your payment processor needs to be very reliable. If your processor goes down in the middle of a transaction, you could lose a sale. 

3. Customer Service: It’s important that your payment processor responds promptly to your inquiries since it’s an integral part of your business. You also want the customer service to come in multiple platforms (phone, email, chat, Twitter) so that you may have instant assistance when you need it.

4. Fees: There can be many hidden fees when getting a payment processor and it’s good to know exactly how much it’s going to cost up front.  Be on the lookout for hidden fees and surcharges, such as rules that can mean most of your payments are at a higher, “non-qualified” rate.

5. Support for your growth: Every company has room for growth and it’s important to choose a payment processor that can support your growth. As transactions increase, you want to make sure that you can still use your payment processor.
